Georgina

Meet Georgina

Georgina never imagined herself behind the wheel of a commercial truck. But life, with its twists and turns, led her to a fulfilling new career.

“It was actually quite an accident,” Georgina recalls. After many years of working for a construction company and a recent divorce, she needed a change.

Seeking a less physically demanding job, Georgina moved into the transportation industry, earned her Class 2 licence and began driving a bus. Yet, she soon realized that it wasn’t quite the right fit for her. “Driving a bus wasn’t really my forte,” she says.

As fate would have it, Georgina’s daughter discovered WBF’s Professional Class 1 Driver program while exploring career options and insisted that her mom apply.

Georgina was initially hesitant. “I thought, well, it’s almost deadline. I don’t have time. I’m too old. They don’t train somebody my age,” she says. However, with her daughter’s encouragement and support from WBF staff, she applied and was accepted into the program.

Embracing new opportunities

At 50, Georgina took the WBF Professional Class 1 Driver program and gained the essential skills to enter the commercial transportation industry.

Driving had always interested Georgina. Coming into the WBF program with a Class 2 licence and experience driving a bus, she welcomed the challenge of maneuvering larger vehicles. “I enjoy driving. I like big vehicles, so it was just a matter of time to get the opportunity to move into it.”

Since completing the program and earning her Class 1 licence, Georgina has secured a stable job where she feels valued and supported. The program gave her the skills, confidence, and opportunities to make a significant career change later in life.

“WBF gave me an in into the industry. Without them, especially at my age, I wouldn’t have gotten a job like this.”
