This fall, history was made in Sarnia, Ontario — as eight women became the first Ontario graduates of Women Building Futures’ Women Ready to Work in Automotive program.

The 16-week pre-apprenticeship program, funded by the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, included 8 weeks of in-class technical training followed by 8 weeks of work placement. Together, this cohort completed hands-on training in two in-demand trades: automotive service technician and heavy-duty equipment technician.

Each of these women came with a unique story — but a shared goal: to build a better future for themselves and their families. And that’s exactly what they’ve done.

“Seeing these women in action — empowered and supported — was a powerful reminder of why we do this work,” said Rachel Veilleux, Manager of External Relations and Growth for Ontario.

Now WBF alumni, these grads represent the strength, skill, and spirit of women breaking into traditionally male-dominated fields. Their journey reflects what’s possible when women are given tools, support, and space to thrive.

Women Building Futures has supported more than 3,000 women across Canada on their path to economic security and career transformation. And with this first Ontario graduation complete, we’re just getting started.

Stay tuned for what’s next — more training opportunities, more industry partnerships, and more bold women changing the face of the trades.
