Introduction to Steamfitter-Pipefitter and Electrician

This 5-week pre-apprenticeship program offers the essential safety certification, hands-on skills and workplace awareness to begin an apprenticeship as a steamfitter-pipefitter or electrician.

Description

This 5-week program, delivered in collaboration with Worley, a leading industrial construction company, starts with basic safety certifications and workplace readiness training. Following the time spent with WBF, Worley will provide students with an orientation on work duties and employment opportunities. 

After the 5-week program, successful candidates will be hired and registered as either a 1st-year steamfitter-pipefitter apprentice or 1st-year electrician apprentice at various locations around Alberta where Worley has projects. This includes the Edmonton Module Yard, Blackfalds Module Yard, projects in the Edmonton area, as well as some fly-in fly-out and drive-in drive-out work around Alberta.

Admission Requirements

  • Academic requirements to expedite movement into apprenticeship role: ​
    • High school diploma or GED/CAEC (preferred not required) ​
    • Minimum requirements: English 20-2, Math 20-3 and Science 10
    • Or passing mark in AIT (Alberta Trades Entrance exam) ​
  • Drivers licence required (learner’s permit not accepted)  ​
  • Alberta resident​
  • Reliable transportation to employer job sites/mod yards​
  • Pass drug and alcohol test and 35-pound lift and carry test (learn more about fitness assessments)

Program Cost

  • Tuition for this program is funded by Worley and the Government of Alberta 
  • Additional funding and awards may be available to support living expenses while in the program 

Employment Opportunities

Upon completion of this program, graduates will be interviewed by Worley for potential employment as a 1st-year steamfitter-pipefitter apprentice or 1st-year electrician apprentice.

What’s a steamfitter-pipefitter?   

Steamfitter-pipefitters lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain, repair and service equipment and piping systems carrying water, steam, fluids, gases, chemicals and fuel. This includes heating, cooling, lubricating and process piping systems.

What’s an electrician? 

Electricians ensure the safe and efficient functioning of electrical systems. Electricians specialize in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems specializing in homes, commercial buildings, industrial facilities and outdoor spaces.
