Build Together 2026-2031

Build Together 2026-2031

Our new strategic planBuild Together 2026-2031 (Build Together), is WBF’s blueprint for getting even more women ready for the trades and the trades ready for women.

And we’re just getting started.

Build Together

Women Building Futures (WBF) was founded in 1998 by a group of City of Edmonton social workers with a simple, but revolutionary, idea: give women who are unemployed, underemployed or stuck in low-paid work a path to economic security through careers in the skilled trades. Since then, our pre-apprenticeship training programs have helped more than 3,000 women transform their lives, while building Alberta’s economy.

Our Vision

Empowering women to build prosperity for their futures and communities.

..

Our Mission

A training organization creating pathways to economic success for women; getting women ready for the trades and the trades ready for women.

Overarching Goal

Transform the lives of 10,000 women by 2040 by training and connecting 90% of them to rewarding employment.

 .

Who We Serve

Women who are unemployed or in unrewarding or low-paid work and want to transform their lives and build careers.

Getting women ready for the trades...

We empower women who are unemployed or stuck in unrewarding, low-paid work, who want to transform their lives and build careers in the skilled trades.

The women we serve come from various backgrounds and all have a unique story of how they arrived at WBF; they are women trying to break the cycle of poverty, parents trying to build a better life for their families, Indigenous women, and new Canadians.

The common thread among them is a shared determination to achieve economic prosperity while contributing to Alberta’s economic growth. We support these adult learners in securing meaningful, rewarding careers and in advancing their lifelong pursuit of professional success.

We meet our clients where they are at in their life journey, and provide them with the tools, skills and support to transform their lives as they begin on their path to building their career in the trades.

Our unique model surrounds our students with support before, during and after they complete our programs.

And the trades ready for women...

WBF helps employers create and maintain a workplace culture where everyone can feel safe and supported. We know that the ability of our WBF students to build economic prosperity goes beyond simply getting your foot in the door. It is about having the security, stability and support needed to grow and thrive in their chosen career.

Build Together’s audacious goal

In Build Together we not only outline a renewed vision and mission, but we have most importantly set a new, audacious goal: we will transform the lives of 10,000 women by 2040 by training and connecting 90% of them to rewarding employment

This is an ambitious goal, but with the continued support and engagement of government, industry partners, community partners, and post‑secondary institutions across Alberta—as well as the broader community—and the dedication of WBF’s engaged, mission‑driven team, this goal is well within reach.

How we will get to 10,000 women by 2040

We will continue to deepen engagement across sectors and industries where women in the trades have been historically underrepresented and where employers are increasingly looking to workforce diversity as a solution to labour and skilled‑trades shortages.

We also acknowledge that we are located within the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s North Saskatchewan River Territory, Fort Edmonton Métis District 9 of the Métis Nation of Alberta. Inclusivity at WBF

WBF is on a learning journey to support diversity, equity and inclusion, with diverse gender inclusion. We’re building an inclusive culture that encourages, uplifts and celebrates the diversity of our employees and the communities we serve with compassion and courage.

Through our programs and services, we nurture a safe, respectful environment where everyone is able to do their best work and can learn and grow together. Our different backgrounds and experiences are our strengths.

We recognize that the term “women” may not include the diverse identities our program is meant to support. We welcome and strive to create an inclusive environment for gender-diverse individuals, which includes all women, non-binary and agender persons, through readiness services and assessment, training, job placement and job retention support.

Please reach out to talk more with us about our programs and services that address gendered barriers to employment.
